Africa-Press – Angola. Around 200,000 tonnes of various food products will be harvested next year in Luanda’s green belt, resulting from the preparation of approximately 50,000 hectares for the agricultural campaign that begins next September.

According to the provincial office of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, production will focus on vegetables, cereals, tubers, bananas, peanuts and others.

The municipalities of Viana, Cacuaco, Icolo and Bengo, Kissama, and Belas are the largest agricultural production centers in Luanda. In these locations, inputs are being distributed, namely seeds, insecticides, as well as the subsidy of fertilizer prices.

In the same perspective, 10 tractors were made available to support more than 400 ex-soldiers organized in cooperatives and peasant associations in the productive areas of Luanda’s green belt.

Livestock

With a view to increasing livestock production in Luanda, many small cattle and goat farmers are also benefiting from training actions and support with medicines to combat the diseases that can plague the animals.

Without advancing numbers, the provincial office of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, intends to soon support a large number of breeders with improved animal species, which can be obtained in the south of the country.

According to the JA, the high prices for the acquisition of seeds and other agricultural inputs have caused a great drop in productivity, in recent times, especially in the green belt of the province of Luanda.

Maria Rosaria, a small producer in the commune of Funda, believes that the measure to support farmers will increase the productivity of farm products.

Along the same lines, ex-military Amândio Baltazar, who is just a few meters away is planting fruit trees. The distribution of inputs is a wise move.

Luanda’s green belt is made up of the municipalities of Luanda, Viana, Cacuaco, Icolo and Bengo, Kissama and Belas, Funda, locations with strong points of agricultural production.
