Africa-Press – Angola. The municipalities of Chitato, Cambulo, Cuango and Lucapa, in the province of Lunda-Norte, have, since 2018, some neighborhoods free of illiteracy, as a result of the actions taken by the authorities of the Education Sector, as part of the revitalization of the literacy process.
The guarantee was given by the provincial coordinator of Youth and Adult Education of the Provincial Education Office, António Taquia, adding that, in the municipalities in question, the program was successful in the areas of Candjamba (Chitato), Serração Malengue and Satxicucu (Cambulo), Kambamba in Cafunfu, Quinongue in the commune of Luremo (Cuango), as well as in Veiga and Roque, in the municipality of Lucapa.
He added that the fact that some neighborhoods in four of the ten municipalities with the highest population density in Lunda-Norte have declared a low level of illiteracy demonstrates the importance of the program that aims to end illiteracy and promote the social and productive inclusion of countless families.
António Taquia said that, in global terms, since the beginning of the Literacy Revitalization, 218,356 citizens, including 129,204,00 women, have already learned to read and write.
“In the 2021/2021 academic year alone, a total of 5,410 young people and adults with school delays and low levels of education increased their knowledge. Women were the ones who most adhered to the program”, said António Taquia, adding that, currently, due to the contract termination with 527 literacy teachers, work is only done with social partners, such as Prison Services, the Seventh Unit of the Border Guard Police and the Non-Governmental Organization Aid for the Development of People for the People (ADPP).
“The debt with literacy teachers has already been paid, and a process is underway to fill 40 vacancies, within the framework of funding from the World Bank, as part of the program to empower girls who are late or drop out of school”, he said.
According to António Taquia, in a first phase, the new literacy teachers will be placed in the municipalities of Chitato and Cambulo. Following the programme, he added, technicians from the Provincial Education Office will travel to the city of Saurimo, in Lunda-Sul, to participate in a training action for trainers.
“As part of the collaboration with the new social partners, the process is now carried out by 102 literacy teachers and an equal number of centers spread across several municipalities in Lunda-Norte”, concluded António Taquia.
