Lunda-Norte proposes five National Heritage sites

Africa-Press – Angola. The authorities of the province of Lunda-Norte sent, this year, to the Ministry of Culture, a list of five places with historical value to be classified as National Heritage.

The objective is the dissemination, appreciation and promotion of local culture, and the proposed locations are the Dundo Obelisk, the site of the discovery of the first seven diamond stones, in 1912, Carumbo Lagoon, one of the seven wonders of the country, the dance tchianda and the musical instrumentquissange, according to the director of the Provincial Office of Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sports in Lunda-Norte, José Pinto.

Currently, Lunda-Norte has six buildings and a station classified as National Heritage, among a set of 72 monuments and sites already identified and 46 others inventoried.

Among those already classified, there are the buildings of the Provincial Government Palace, located in the town of Chitato, the Post Office, Telegraph and Telephone Office (CTT), the Dundo Regional Museum, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição do Dundo, Missão do Sagrado Coração of Jesus do Mussuco, Bala-Bala Archaeological Station and the Sonas.

Director José Pinto highlighted that the Sonas, which in December last year were elevated to Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), constitute one of the main attractions of cultural tourism in Lunda- north.

The country currently has a total of 323 classified monuments and sites and around 1,239 inventories.

We celebrate the International Day of Monuments and Sites, established on April 18, 1982 by the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).

This year, the anniversary is celebrated under the motto “Heritage Resilient to Disasters and Conflicts – Preparation, Response and Recovery”.

According to the Ministry of Culture, the national program for this year’s celebration seeks not only to pursue the objectives formulated by ICOMOS, but also reflects, above all, the concerns and purposes of the Angolan State within the scope of public policies in favor of heritage, combining a set of actions and diverse cultural activities.
