Africa-Press – Angola. The acting provincial governor of Lunda-Sul, Cláudio Pemessa, invited this Sunday, in Saurimo, the local population to actively participate in the construction of the province and the country, to dignify the heroes of the 4th of February, who gave a lot to the liberation of the Angolan people.

The ruler was speaking on the occasion of yet another anniversary of the beginning of the Armed Struggle for National Liberation, celebrated on February 4th, this time under the motto “Preserving the values of the country, let us honor our heroes”.

Cláudio Pemessa highlighted the importance of greater unity, solidarity, tolerance and dialogue, so that families “can truly live in peace”.

He appealed to the conscience of citizens in exalting the achievements achieved, and must preserve and safeguard public, historical and cultural heritage, as a legacy for future generations.

The date of February 4, 1961 is written in the history of Angola as a milestone in the armed struggle that culminated, 14 years later, with the proclamation of National Independence, on November 11, 1975, putting an end to five centuries of Portuguese colonization.

It was in the early hours of February 4, 1961 that around 200 Angolan nationalists, armed with machetes and other sharp weapons, launched a series of attacks on several prisons to free political prisoners from the Portuguese colonial regime.

The attacks on the House of Military Reclusion, the PIDE prisons and the 7th Public Security Police Station, as well as the “Official Broadcaster of Angola” in Luanda, culminated in the deaths of 40 nationalists, according to official data.

To keep the importance of these historical facts alive and pass them on to subsequent generations, reinforce the sense of patriotism and the values of freedom, peace and solidarity, the date was elevated to the category of “National Holiday”.

Cláudio Pemessa laid a wreath in the new square in the provincial capital of Lunda-Sul, aiming to pay homage to the unknown soldier, in the Air Force Triangle.

The act was witnessed by the deputy governor for the Political, Social and Economic Sector, Mendes Gaspar, by the municipal administrator of Saurimo, among other members of the provincial government and defense and security bodies.

Deputies, magistrates, former combatants and veterans of the country, representatives of political parties, ecclesiastical entities and traditional authorities were also present.
