Africa-Press – Angola. The administration of public and private Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) will experience another dynamism, in the near future, after the training that the managers of these establishments are receiving, since yesterday, in terms of management and strategic planning.

In training, which is part of the 2nd Edition of the Specialization Course in Higher Education Management, HEI managers will improve their knowledge of teaching management, strategic planning, scientific research and extension activities.

As part of this programme, according to the representative of UNI.AO/Expertise France, in Angola, Osvaldo Varela, who was speaking at the opening of the course, until next year, a total of 200 HEI managers will be trained.

The official said that this course aims to contribute to the improvement of the institutions’ management and leadership skills and, consequently, the improvement of Higher Education in the country.

It is a support program for Higher Education, funded by the European Union, worth 13 million euros, supervised by UNI.AO, in a five-year cooperation (2019-2024), with the Angolan Executive.

In this second phase, the training program covers 113 managers from ten provinces in the country, of which 43 are rectors, vice-rectors and directors-general of HEIs, 21 deans of faculties and 31 directors of departments, in addition to heads of offices.

Osvaldo Varela explained that the training of managers is implemented in B-Learning formats (semi-classroom) and is divided into four groups, of which three are in Luanda and one in Lubango (Huíla province).

In the first edition of 2021-2022, 89 specialists from Luanda, Benguela, Cabinda, Cuanza-Sul, Lunda-Norte and Bengo were trained and certified, a participation that represented 45% of women and 52% of HEIs of a public nature, where the success rate was 88%.

Economy Diversification

Sister Maria de Assunção, dean of the Catholic University of Angola (UCAN), the institution that hosts the training, considered that the Specialization course in Higher Education Management belongs to the first component of a program that is one of the most emblematic training activities.

He explained that it was an activity, created at the request of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESCTI), as he understood the need to improve management processes and, fundamentally, the quality of teaching, research and extension.

Mother Maria de Assunção stressed that this training cycle is intended to increase the diversification of the economy, support the training of qualified staff and the creation of jobs in the country’s priority sectors.

Bet On Innovation

MESCTI’s representative, Guilhermina Ngola, considered that the ministry of tutelage supports the Higher Education subsystem program in the production of knowledge and innovation, with the creation of new postgraduate courses and training in strategic areas for the country’s development. .

Guilhermina Ngola said that the training cycle was implemented by UCAN, in partnership with the Universidade Aberta de Lisboa (UAB), with the support of the UNI.AO program and MESCTI.
