Africa-Press – Angola. The governor of the province of Huíla, Nuno Mahapi, said this Friday that the entry into operation of the Matala hydroelectric plant will relaunch the manufacturing industry and agriculture in the district.

The government official made these considerations during the inauguration of the infrastructure by the President of the Republic, highlighting that the fact that the dam is associated with an irrigated perimeter of more than 40 kilometers, paves the way for Huíla to become a “big” hub of agricultural development.

Nuno Mahapi made it known that the perimeter of more than ten thousand hectares annually produces more than nine thousand tons of various products.

On the other hand, he highlighted that one of the biggest gains is the reduction in fuel consumption in thermal plants.

Monthly diesel consumption in the province of Huíla, with the energization of the Matala hydro plant, went from 16 million liters in December 2022 to seven million in April 2024.

The plant, as a whole, with 40.8 megawatts guarantees clean energy that saves around 66 million, 977 thousand and 280 liters/year of fossil fuel, if thermal plants are used, which corresponds to a saving of 13,395,456,000 Kz/ year.

Consequently, around 214,327,296 tons of CO2 will no longer be emitted per year.
