Africa-Press – Angola. The middle Kwanza corridor currently produces three thousand 547 megawatts (MW) of energy, equivalent to half of its seven thousand capacity.

The information was provided by the person responsible for the control area of the Cambambe Hydroelectric Power Plant, João Guimarães, who mentioned that, to increase power, the Caculo Cabaça dam is under construction, which should add another 2,100 MW to the system.

According to the source, who was speaking at the end of a visit to this enterprise on Sunday, the energy is produced by three of the eight dams designed as part of the program to harness the hydro-energy potential of the middle course of the Kwanza River, which comprises the provinces of Malanje, Cuanza-Norte and Cuanza-Sul.

The dams in production are Capanda, with a capacity of 520 MW, and Laúca (2,067 MW), both in the province of Malanje, as well as Cambambe (960 MW), in Cuanza-Norte.

The Cambambe Hydroelectric Plant serves, in addition to Cuanza-Norte, nine provinces, representing an asset in the national electrical system that interconnects the north, south and center systems of the country.

The project also includes the construction of the Zenzo-1 (450 MW), Zenzo-2 (120 MW), Túmulo do Caçador (450 MW) and Luíme dams, with a capacity of 330 megawatts.

According to João Guimarães, alongside production, the biggest challenge continues to be the distribution of energy, as it is an operation that requires large investments.

The provincial government of Cuanza-Norte is working to expand electricity to communes and villages, after the electrification of the 10 municipal headquarters.
