Africa-Press – Angola. The MPLA, as the majority party, is setting an example in the importance and empowerment of women in society, highlighted yesterday in Luanda, the deputy and representative of women parliamentarians, Maria Cândida Narciso.

The deputy, who was speaking during a roundtable on Women, Justice and Democracy, held by the Action for Rural Development and Environment (ADRA), said that women have gained greater political space in the country, with 69 in parliament today, a number that considers it satisfactory.

Maria Cândida Narciso alluded to the 8th Congress of the MPLA party, held last December, to recall that, in the conclave, gender parity was introduced, so that, at the management level, women make up 50 percent of the Central Committee.

The deputy appeals to women and young people to get involved in citizenship movements and actions and political framework, so that they can make their contribution to the development of society.

“I appeal to all women and young people to get involved in issues of citizenship and politics. They do not need to join a political group or party, but in civil associations. We need to make our contribution to develop and exercise our potential”, said the deputy.

Cândida Narciso also referred to the need for electoral registration, highlighting the role of women, as an important fringe of society, for joining the electoral register and voting.

The deputy considers the challenges that women face at a family, domestic and professional level to be permanent. Therefore, she considers the support of the partner and the children as important, so that they can reconcile and have an active and balanced intervention in the various tasks they propose to perform.

information sharing

Present at the meeting, the director of ADRA, Carlos Cambuta, said that the objective was to share information about the work that organizations and civil society have been developing, within the scope of the empowerment of women, with emphasis on participation politics.

“We need the different women’s organizations to make efforts to hold awareness-raising lectures in the communities, so that women have an active participation in social and political development processes, with emphasis on the elections next August”, he considered.

As they constitute the largest fringe in the country, he said, there is a need for women to be involved in updating the electoral register, in order to vote. The official considers it important to intensify electoral civic education actions in municipalities and rural areas, for knowledge and awareness of electoral registration.

“We defend the importance of promoting permanent and continuing civic education actions. We believe that for citizens with access to information, the other information they receive, at election time, will only be supplemented”, he explained.

The coordinator of the Cazenga Gender Development Association, Maria Julho, said, for her part, that such meetings would be more valuable, due to the relevant theme, and to assess the role of women and the problems that afflict them.

She considers the expression that women have today to be significant, but she says she is worried about the many social problems she faces.

“We must give more possibilities to women; it is true that power is not given, it is conquered, but possibilities must be opened for women to conquer their space”, he highlighted.
