Africa-Press – Angola. The acting provincial delegate from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), João da Silva, pointed out yesterday, Monday, the training of penitentiary rehabilitation operators as the body’s priority action, aimed at improving the re-education process in prisons.
The officer took on this challenge during the provincial act alluding to the 44th anniversary of the Penitentiary Service, which is being celebrated yesterday, noting that the current context requires more preparation of the body’s staff, to stop less rewarding practices within the penal population and guide rehabilitation towards the proper reinsertion of prisoners after serving their sentences.
He also underlined the improvement of accommodation conditions in jails, taking into account that many of them are out of line with the number of inmates, in addition to medical and medication assistance.
Another bet focuses on increasing agricultural production in penitentiary units, considering that the Penitentiary Service has favorable conditions to stand out in this segment and contribute to improving the diet of inmates and marketing the surplus, to ensure the maintenance of the production cycle.
Despite the challenges listed, the official highlighted the efforts that have been undertaken by the Provincial Delegation of the Ministry of the Interior in favor of improving the working conditions of the Penitentiary Service.
The Penitentiary Service was created in 1979, after leaving the Ministry of Justice to integrate the Ministry of the Interior.
Its mission is to carry out measures depriving citizens of liberty, determined by the judicial authorities, as well as to implement policies for the rehabilitation and social reintegration of prisoners, to carry out supervision and compliance with preventive detention, and the terms of parole.
The Provincial Directorate of the Penitentiary Service currently controls 1,453 inmates (475 detainees and 978 convicts) distributed across the penitentiary establishments of Damba, Malanje and the female penitentiary of Cacuso.
