Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of National Defense and Veterans of the Fatherland, João Ernesto dos Santos “Liberdade” highlighted, on Wednesday, in Luanda, the importance of honoring the heroes of the National Liberation Struggle for their crucial contribution to independence, sovereignty and the recognition of Angola in the concert of nations

The government official expressed this fact in statements to the press, at the end of the raising of the Monument Flag, at the National Museum of Military History, regarding the 65th anniversary of the Day of the Beginning of the Armed Struggle for National Liberation, in memory of the heroes of February 4, 1961.

On the occasion, he said that the decision of Angolan patriots, in 1961, to begin the national liberation struggle, culminating in the proclamation of independence, on November 11, 1975, allows Angolans to work for the country’s development.

In this sense, he appealed to Angolans, especially the youth, to work harder and better to consolidate the ideals of freedom.

“Each in their own time. If in 1961 it was a small group of citizens who decided to fight, today we are millions and, like millions, we must do much more and better, following, naturally, the example of our heroes”, he highlighted.

On the other hand, João Ernesto dos Santos highlighted the existing programs aimed at valuing former combatants, highlighting that many are part of the Angolan Armed Forces, some have retired and others are part of the group of pensioners at the Social Security Institute of this body.

He also said that the Executive has been doing everything to create conditions that allow a better life to be provided to all those who fought for independence, for the achievement of peace, unity and national reconciliation.

The Minster also informed that the 4 de Fevereiro Historical Landmark, located in the municipality of Cazenga, is being studied so that, in the near future, it can benefit from interventions to improve its condition.

Angola marks, February 4th, the 65th anniversary of the Beginning of the Armed Struggle for National Liberation, a milestone in the country’s history, under the motto “Preserving the Values of the Fatherland, Let Us Honor Our Heroes”.

It is recalled that, in 1961, Angolan patriots began armed resistance against the Portuguese colonial regime, which culminated in the proclamation of National Independence, on November 11, 1975.
