Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, arrives today, Thursday, in Lunda Norte province, to find out about the execution levels of the works on the Luachimo hydroelectric dam and the Lucapa photovoltaic power plant.
During 24 hours in Lunda Norte, the minister will also learn about the installation of the thermal power station with a gas turbine, with capacity to produce 25 megawatts of electricity and the construction of the new water distribution network, which foresees 15,000 household connections.
Evaluated at more than US$212 million, via a credit line from China, the rehabilitation and expansion works of the Luachimo dam, underway since 2016, are 99 percent completed, will increase from 8.4 to 34 megawatts (MW) of energy capacity, higher than the local need, that is, about 50 percent of the energy produced should remain in reserve.
The entry into operation of this energy project will allow the expansion of energy to the benefit of 186 thousand residents in the city of Dundo and in the municipalities of Cambulo and Lucapa, including the localities of Fucauma, Cassanguidi, Luxilo and Calonda.
In addition to home connections, which in the first phase will benefit more than nine thousand families, the project foresees around 30 industrial connections.
With a physical completion of 61 percent, the Lucapa photovoltaic park, with the capacity to produce 7.5 megawatts of energy, will benefit around 49,000 inhabitants.
Before visiting Lunda Norte, João Baptista Borges will work in the province of Lunda Sul, where he will see the work on the new water collection and distribution systems and the Saurimo photovoltaic plant.
Lunda Norte, with almost one million inhabitants, results from the division of the former province of Lunda, on July 4, 1978. It is located in the northeast of the country and comprises the municipalities of Chitato (political and economic capital), Cambulo, Caungula , Cuilo, Cuango, Capenda Camulemba, Lucapa, Lubalo, Lóvua and Xá-Muteba.
