Africa-Press – Angola. The minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Carmen dos Santos, announced to the press on Sunday, in Luanda, that horse mackerel fishing is banned from July 1 to August 31 of the current year.
The minister made it official at the end of a reception for a delegation from the United Nations High-Level Conference on the Oceans (UNOC) held in France.
Minister Carmen dos Santos explained that the ban aims to protect the species during the Spawning period, which the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources regularly bans during the aforementioned months.
She said that the measure joins the ban on the capture of so-called demersal fish species.
The official added that with the entry of cold waters from Namibia into Benguela, it is possible that schooling of horse mackerel and sardines could develop.
While the ban on horse mackerel fishing remains in place, artisanal and industrial fishermen must exploit other species, such as sardines, to supply the market.
On the occasion, Carmen dos Santos also announced the ban of pelagic trawling, which will also go from July the1st to August 31st.
She stated that trawling is a normal fishing technique that, if properly applied, does not reach the ground or drag the seabed.
