Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of Health, Sílvia Lutucuta, on Sunday praised the positive results of the pediatric cardiac surgery campaign taking place at the Cardeal Dom Alexandre do Nascimento Hospital, in Luanda, with the support of the Ngana Zenza Foundation.

In statements to the press, the Minister recognized the contribution of the Ngana Zenza Foundation, led by the First Lady of the Republic, Ana Dias Lourenço, for the sensitivity shown towards social causes, with particular attention to children’s health and, especially, pediatric cardiology.

She stated that the campaign is an example of effective cooperation between the State, non-profit foundations and the private sector.

Within the framework of this partnership, it was possible to mobilize a North American foundation headed by Professor Norwick, a specialist with recognized international experience in pediatric cardiac surgery, who is in Angola to provide differentiated assistance and support the training of national teams.

According to the Minister, 24 surgeries are scheduled until the 20th of this month, with 14 children already operated on, some with pathologies considered highly complex and previously refused by other teams, including those abroad, due to alleged lack of surgical viability, all with results considered satisfactory.

Among the cases treated are children with transposition of the great arteries, atrial and ventricular septal defects, tetralogy of Fallot, valvular diseases associated with rheumatic fever, as well as severe congenital malformations of the sternum and diaphragm. One of the cases involved a newborn operated on at only one week old, whose surgery was successful.

The Minister of Health highlighted that the campaign also has a strong impact on the training of Angolan professionals, since national specialists work together with the foreign team, acquiring greater autonomy, while international partners provide technical support in the most complex procedures.

On that occasion, he left a message of recognition for healthcare professionals, whom he considered fundamental pillars of the national system, for the commitment and resilience demonstrated in the performance of their duties.
