Africa-Press – Angola. More than 20 literary works by writers from Huambo province have been shelved due to lack of funding for editing, printing and publication.

The fact was revealed by the person in charge of the Brigada Jovem de Literatura de Angola (BJLA), Afonso Kachequele Lenguessa, during the swearing in of 25 coordinators and their assistants from this youth organisation.

The new members, who will assist the local provincial executive board of the BJLA, were appointed recently, following the review of the association’s statutes, during the II National Meeting of Literary Brigadismo, held in the city of Huambo, between 22 and 24 Last March.

On the occasion, Afonso Kachequele Lenguessa referred that many of these works have been shelved for more than four years, due to lack of financial support for their publication, despite the high desire of the writers to contribute to the enrichment of the literary market of the province and the country, in general.

He said that the lack of book industries in the province is also one of the major constraints for local literary production.

This reality, according to the official, has conditioned the achievement of the organization’s expectations, which estimated to publish, through its members, at least one work each month, against the current average of four to six per year.

He stressed that the few books that have been made available to readers result from the authors’ own savings, a process that takes a long time to complete the necessary amount due to the large budgets charged in literary production.

According to Afonso Kachequele Lenguessa, for the production of a literary work in the province, a budget of at least 800 million Kwanzas is required, due to the lack of a book industry, implying, therefore, other expenses with the transportation.

To minimize the situation, he said that the solution has been to opt for the publication of anthologies that house works by different authors.

The Brigada Jovem de Literatura de Angola, represented in all provinces of the country, has existed in Huambo since 1980.

In the province of Huambo, it controls more than 250 members, among which writers, poets and reciters stand out.
