Origin
International Children’s Book Day is an international event celebrated on April 2, in honor of the birth date of Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen in 1985.
Hans Christian Andersen was the first writer to adapt existing fables to children’s language, creating a specific product for children’s consumption. The most famous versions of classics such as “O Duckling Ugly”, “A Pequena Sereia” and “A Polergazinha”, are by him.
Institution of the date
The date was established by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) in 1967. This month, the non-profit organization held a series of events such as the Hans Christian Andersen Prize, considered the Nobel Prize for Children’s Literature.
IBBY chooses a children’s writer from one of the 75 countries it represents to honor. Every year, IBBY chooses a writer from one of the countries that make up the institution to write a message to children and young people around the world, and invites a designer from one of the countries to also create a poster to represent the event each year.
