Africa-Press – Angola. The MPLA was dismayed by the death of the writer and journalist Dario de Melo, which took place this Monday, in Benguela, due to illness, at the age of 87.

In a statement, the Political Bureau of the MPLA Central Committee praises the figure of the teacher, school inspector, broadcaster, agricultural manager, employee of the then Ministry of Information of Angola, editor, columnist and writer, considering him “precursor of Children’s Literature Angolan, with a recognized and undeniable path”.

He adds that Dario de Melo has distinguished himself as a mentor to several generations of Angolan writers who, perennially, will be grateful for the teachings of the “master”, who leaves convinced of having left an infinite nucleus of scribes inspired by him.

According to the MPLA, in the universe of Angolan journalism, Dario de Melo’s service record records passages, of which he was director, Correio da Semana, Semanário Económico, Jango newspaper, Tveja magazine, Televisão Pública de Angola, as well as on the Voz do Bié station.

With literary prominence for works aimed at children and young people, underlines the note, “Dario de Melo owns a writing that captivated the reader by the elegance, plasticity and great dose of detail that offered the effervescence of life”. “He leaves a legacy with more than dozens of books, of which “Onda dormida” and “As sete vida de um gato” stand out, with which he won the Children’s Literature Prize promoted by the PALOP, in 1998, with the sponsorship of the Bibliographic Fund of Portuguese Language.

A founding member of the Angolan Writers’ Union, where he held the post of president of the general assembly, in the 1992/1994 biennium, Dario also stood out as one of the most prominent Angolan writers with an inclination towards prose.

The Political Bureau of the MPLA Central Committee considers the death of Dario de Melo as “the loss of a true master of the word, unavoidable icon of Angolan literature, cultivator of profound kindness and patriotism, symbols of reference for those who had him as a teacher”.

“In this moment of pain and mourning, on behalf of its militants, friends and sympathizers, the MPLA Political Bureau bows to the memory of Dario de Melo and sends its heartfelt condolences to the family and the community of Angolan writers”, reads if in the communiqué.
