National Assembly Approves Bill against Online Misinformation

Africa-Press – Angola. The National Assembly approved on Thursday, a bill to combat the dissemination of false information on the internet, with 97 votes in favor, 74 against and three abstentions.

The bill provides for the accountability of individuals and legal entities involved in the deliberate production and dissemination of false information in the digital space and aims to establish a legal regime designed to prevent and combat the intentional spread of false content on the internet.

Although it does not present, at this stage, concrete values for the criminal sanctions to be applied to offenders, the deputies assure that the parliamentary debate will allow the mechanisms of prevention to be made clear, while simultaneously safeguarding freedom of expression and the right to information.

Composed of five chapters and 29 articles, the Bill establishes a set of preventive and accountability measures aimed at curbing the deliberate dissemination of false content.
