Africa-Press – Angola. The first vice-Speaker of the National Assembly, Américo Cuanonoca, said on Tuesday in Luanda that Russia is, from very early on, an indispensable partner in the fight against Portuguese colonialism and, for this reason, Angolans will be eternally grateful for this contribution.
Speaking to the press on the sidelines of the celebration of Russia Day, which is marked on Thursday, the MP recalled that the Russians who helped arm the defense forces during the guerrilla war, trained the military, formed cadres, and led Angola to independence.
The deputy emphasized that relations between the two peoples are historic and based on a strong bond, in that the liberation of Africa, especially the southern region, also owes much to the contribution of this nation which, alongside Cuban troops, helped defeat the South African invader and, as a result, Namibia became independent.
He also highlighted the support in training “many cadres” who today run the country, so that, in the current times, it is the responsibility of the National Assembly to promote cooperation between the two parliaments and strengthen the friendly relations between both peoples.
General Pedro Sebastião, who trained in Russia, stressed that the mere fact that the country is celebrating 50 years of independence, as well as its cooperation with the former Soviet Union and now Russia, says everything about this cooperation.
“It is an excellent bond of friendship, fraternity, and cooperation that has existed and continues to exist between our peoples. It is precisely reflected in this celebration we are witnessing here,” he emphasized.
He stated that if it were not for the “former Soviet Union, we might not be celebrating 50 years of independence today, it might have been more difficult or more uncertain.”
Therefore, he said, this is a tribute that Angolans pay to all those Russians who passed through Angola, lending their youth, some even watering the battlefields here with their own blood, so that the country could become independent.
“This date also concerns us, it has a very special meaning for all of us,” he said.
The Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Isaac do Anjos, valued Angola-Russia cooperation in the field of staff training, which is why relations remain at the same level.
According to the minister, Angola has close relations with Russia in the field of agriculture, which has resulted in the acquisition of fertilizers, motorized equipment, and, above all, technology.
June 12, Russia Day, symbolizes the birth of this nation, with the Declaration of Sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) in 1990.
