National Police Commits to Swift Defendant Presentation

Africa-Press – Angola. The second provincial commander of the National Police (PN) in Luanda, Caitano Roque, reiterated this Tuesday the police’s commitment to actions aimed at the timely presentation of defendants to procedural support units, to avoid overcrowding in transit cells.

During the coordination meeting between officials from the Belas district and the Provincial Command of the PN in Luanda, Caitano Roque said it is important to improve coordination between the Attorney General’s Office and Criminal Police bodies to improve the mobility of defendants.

In turn, the president of the Belas District Court, Edson Liz, spoke about the consequences of the long stay of detainees in prisons, including corruption, disobedience, and non-compliance with court orders, among other situations.The representative stated that the concern relates to the number of defendants in cells after being heard and having coercive measures applied, as well as the procedural deadlines.

The representative of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Elizabeh Irene Figueiredo, stated that the delay in transferring detained citizens to temporary cells creates constraints ranging from injuries to deaths.

The meeting’s agenda highlighted procedural processing and the mobility of defendants in the Procedural Support Unit for the Judge of Guarantees, habeas corpus petitions, and the security of the Belas District Court buildings.

The meeting was attended by the municipal commanders of Kilamba Kiaxi, Belas, Talatona, and Kilamba, as well as the heads of the Department of Criminal Investigation (DIIP) and the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) in the municipality of Belas.
