The new members of the Council of the Republic, namely Adalberto da Costa Júnior, Nimi A Simbi and Jorge Alicerces Valentim, promised, yesterday, during the inauguration, in Cidade Alta, to contribute to peace and national reconciliation, in favor of an environment of tranquility and the progress of the country.
The Head of State, when addressing the newly sworn in, made it known that, in a year as crucial as this one, in which Angolans go to the polls to choose the deputies to the National Assembly, by all means, is the year in which the President of the Republic most needs the work of counselors. “I believe that everyone is ready to do so”, he underlined.
João Lourenço hopes, therefore, to count on the experience and knowledge of the councilors, independently of other factors, taking into account the political context of the country, referred, by the way, by the President of the Republic, as “such a crucial year”. welcome to the new board members”, he emphasized.
The new members of the Council of the Republic, two were appointed by inherent functions, as they are presidents of political parties, namely UNITA and FNLA, and the third, as a member of civil society, appointed by the President of the Republic, taking the place of a former director who started to perform functions in the Executive.
In statements to the press, the councilors outlined their position and participation in the collegiate consultation body of the President of the Republic. For the president of the FNLA, Nimi A Simbi, the presence in the Council of the Republic is an opportunity to support all acts in favor of democracy, first, and to support the decisions taken to improve the living conditions of Angolans, who, at this moment, are particularly very difficult, second. “Some courageous steps must be taken to improve the lives of Angolans.”
The 84-year-old politician and nationalist Jorge Valentim said he still has the intellectual strength to work hard to consolidate peace, national reconciliation and the country’s progress. “I recognize that a lot has been done by the Executive in this regard, and, therefore, I am available to help, with my ideas, so that Angola always occupies a vanguard place in the world context”, said the new member of the Council.
The leader of UNITA, Adalberto da Costa Júnior, promised to do everything in his power to consolidate the environment of peace and national reconciliation, especially in an election year and promised to commit himself to help “steer things forward, until then, in an environment of great harmony”.

The UNITA leader is received today, in audience, by the Head of State.
