Africa-Press – Angola. The Secretary of State for Fisheries, Esperança da Costa, delivered, Wednesday (27), 15 new tanks and nets to reinforce the production of tilapia fish in the Kilunda lagoons, in the municipality of Funda, in Cacuaco, Luanda. .

According to the official, the reinforcement with those means has the main objective of improving the food diet and reducing the levels of poverty in the communities surrounding the lagoons.

Esperança da Costa said that the attention given to the Kilunda lagoon is related to the diagnosis previously made by the Executive, which identified as a primary need the increase in production and consequent capture of tilapia by the community residing in the area with a view to satisfying their needs. in fish. To this end, 33 citizens, including 22 men and 11 women, were previously trained to handle the new equipment.

The Secretary of State revealed that the 15 tanks are part of a pilot project to promote aquaculture, which is why training was given to some young people to handle the equipment and possess technical knowledge inherent to its use.

“Young women will be linked to the production and processing of fish, because we have the guarantee from FAO that it will continue to provide training, in addition to the support it will give to the Fisheries Institute and to the Agriculture and Fisheries directorates that will always be linked to this project”, he stressed.

At the end of the implementation of the 15 tanks, the last two of which went to the lagoon yesterday, a team from Fisheries returns to the field for a period of two weeks with the objective of verifying the effects achieved, as well as observing and studying the movements and current of the waters of the lagoon. to then be able to carry out the repopulation again with around 15 thousand alpine people. As for support, Esperança Costa said that the repopulation of the tanks will be the responsibility of the Fisheries and Agriculture Institute (IPA), which will be responsible for supplying the fish with food.

“For the cultivation and production of fish, technicians will always be present to administer the food ration until the process is completed and when it reaches a weight of about 2 kilograms and 200 grams, the appropriate capture is carried out”, he explained, advancing that the project, located in the municipality of Cacuaco, in the commune of Kilunda, will be managed by the cooperatives, to be created in the communities, which, in addition to improving their diet, will also give sustainability to the project itself.

In addition to delivering the tanks/nets, the Secretary of State for Fisheries also X-rayed the Mundial market, as well as visited two tilapia tanks in the 4 de Fevereiro-Ecocampo neighborhood, an initiative of a private company. In the Mundial market, she also visited a fish processing project for women, with the construction of a salting and drying centre, a project already prepared and ready to be implemented with the support of the ministry.
