Africa-Press – Angola. One hundred and thirty citizens in conflict with the law were heard in Cuando Cubango, since the provision of the Justice Ombudsman Services in this province, in June 2022, with 39 having seen their cases resolved, 32 are ongoing and seven forwarded to the Central Office.

The data were presented today, Tuesday, in the city of Menongue, capital of Cuando Cubango, by the head of Ombudsman Services in the province, António Chileno, as part of the opening of Ombudsman week, which runs from 19 to 28 April.

The jurist made it known that, among the various problems presented by citizens, there are mainly the phenomenon of violence in the workplace, assistance to users who go to public offices and treatment of prisoners in Missombo and Menongue jails.

There is also the slowness in the procedural process, the lack of infrastructure for public institutions and the desertion of the military due to the lack of bank branches in some locations.

The ombudsman said that the situation of beggars in stores, bakeries, ATMs, the delay in dealing with the mandatory and optional inventory process for widows, as well as alimony for children, are also situations that must be improved.

The lack of doctors for some areas of the General Hospital of Cuando Cubango, which limits the ability to respond to users, were also identified as concerns that should continue to deserve attention and advocacy.

The head of the justice ombudsman services in Cuando Cubango said that the ombudsman is, under the terms of the Constitution and the Law, responsible for receiving complaints from citizens and intermediating for the most appropriate solutions for each specific case, when the citizen feels wronged.

He said that the power of the Ombudsman depends largely on cooperation with other bodies involved in the administration of justice, as stipulated in article 18 of the Constitution of the Republic of Angola.

He added that the ombudsman is also responsible for alerting the Executive to situations of violation of rights, freedoms and guarantees.

The opening activity of the week of the Ombudsman’s Office in Cuando Cubango was marked by a lecture on the theme: “The ombudsman as a defender of citizens’ rights, freedoms and fundamental guarantees”.
