Africa-Press – Angola. The project to build the water transfer system for the Cunene River, from the town of Cafu, in the municipality of Ombadja, via an open channel that will connect the areas of Cuamato, Dombondola and Namacunde, will boost productive activity in the region, given the potential for arable land along the route.
With a length of approximately 157 kilometers of open channel and a set of 30 chimpacas, the project budgeted at 44,358 million kwanzas is already about 86 percent of physical execution, whose completion is scheduled for March.
When the canal is completed, it will be able to irrigate thousands of hectares of arable land and benefit more than 235,000 inhabitants and at least 250,000 head of cattle, who are currently experiencing a major drought problem. The Secretary of State for Agriculture and Livestock, João Manuel Bartolomeu da Cunha, who paid a visit to the Cafu canal, to assess the progress of the works and create conditions for the implementation of agricultural projects along the canal, said that the Ministry intends to work with communities in order to make better use of the water transfer project from the Cunene River.
Without mentioning the number of hectares of arable land to be prepared along the canal, João da Cunha said that the objective is to encompass and aggregate as many families as possible in the production of foodstuffs. “Now, it is urgent for peasants to have the necessary means to increase agricultural production and diversify crops”, he stressed.
According to the minister, the objective is to help families, how to work the land and treat animals in order to obtain greater income. , improve living conditions, generate employment and fight poverty, as with this project, large-scale production without dependence on rain will be boosted along the channel.
