Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, reviewed the progress of construction on the “Quilonga Grande” Water Supply System in Bom Jesus on Wednesday, aiming to provide drinking water to at least five million residents of that region and the province of Luanda.

The project, led by the Chinese company Sinoydro, began in February 2025 in the province of Icolo e Bengo and is expected to generate approximately 600 direct jobs throughout its construction.

The President, who is visiting the construction site of this project for the second time, scheduled for completion in December 2026, was briefed on the project’s progress by the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, and engineer Edmundo Frederico. Budgeted at US$491 million, the project is part of System 5, which involves capturing raw water from the Kwanza River and treating up to 518,000 cubic meters per day at a treatment plant (WTP).

This project also includes the construction of 11 distribution centers, over 2,230 kilometers of water network, 362,225 household connections, and 1,240 public fountains.

The main infrastructure includes a 110-kilometer pipeline with pipes up to 1,600 millimeters in diameter, equipped with 134 control and control boxes, as well as fiber optic remote management and telemetry systems, which will enable real-time operation.

The “Quilonga Grande” project, combined with the other Bita System, also under construction in the municipality of Belas, Luanda, is expected to increase the water supply capacity to cover up to 10 million residents of the Angolan capital by 2027.

The two projects represent a milestone in responding to growing urban demand and in the Angolan government’s efforts to improve the living conditions of the population.

Also, as part of his field trip, President João Lourenço, accompanied by his aides, also visited the construction site of the Bita Water Supply Project, located in the municipality of Belas, Luanda.
