Africa-Press – Angola. Angolans residing in Namibia gather at Windhoek City Hall, Independence Avenue in the Namibian capital, to support the National Team, on Friday, in the game against Nigeria, in the quarter-finals of CAN`2023, in Cote d`Ivoire.

A note, signed by the ambassador, Juvelina Imperial, states that Angolans will gather at Windhoek City Hall to watch the game, a way of expressing patriotism and pride, even from afar, for the Angolan homeland.

In the match, to be played from 6pm, at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, in the City of Abidjan, Namibian citizens will join the cheerleading squad of unconditional support for the Palancas Negras, heading towards the unprecedented semi-final.

“After Angola’s victory over Namibia (3-0), in the round of 16, Angolans want to return to walking the streets of Windhoek and at the Angolan Embassy to sing the National Anthem, as a strength of love for their country and with qualifying for the semi-finals”, it reads.

The communication from the diplomatic representation recalls the euphoric way in which the resident Angolan citizens celebrated the victory over Namibia, even in heavy rain, without anyone giving up.

Since Angola’s first participation in a final phase of the CAN, the largest competition of nations organized by CAF, in 1996, in South Africa, Angola has never managed to reach the semi-finals.

The best thing he has done so far was reaching the quarter-finals, in Ghana (2008), Angola (2010) when the competition was contested by 16 teams and there were no round of 16.

In this edition, with the participation of 24 teams and the reintroduction of the “eighths”, the national team once again reaches the “fourths”, recognizing, this time, a greater effort (merit) compared to the degree of difficulty.

CAN’2023 was supposed to be held between last June/July, but due to heavy rains during that period, CAF transferred the event to this year.
