Africa-Press – Angola. The Parliament Speaker Carolina Cerqueira stressed on Wednesday in Luanda, that protecting sexual and reproductive health in the country requires an integrated approach in which public health, social protection, and human rights policies reinforce each other.
Speaking at the opening of the workshop “Family Planning and the Impact of Climate Change on Sexual and Reproductive Health,” Cerqueira stated that aligning legislation, planning, and funding would transform existing strategies into concrete results that save lives and preserve rights.
The politician said that this strategy involves strengthening cooperation between countries, sharing best practices, mobilizing resources, and harmonizing strategies that prioritize the health and dignity of women in public policies.
Cerqueira added that family planning and the impact of climate change on sexual and reproductive health have become relevant issues within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region since climate change directly affects communities, economies, and women and girls in particular.
The parliamentary leader stated that the SADC Parliamentary Forum promotes this initiative in alignment with regional parliaments, which have played a fundamental role in promoting policies integrating the gender dimension, family planning, and climate resilience as pillars of sustainable development.
Cerqueira emphasized the importance of family planning in various aspects of social life, including its contribution to maternal and child health, reduction of maternal and infant mortality, and greater parental control over their lives, enabling a more stable and healthy environment for children to develop in.
She also emphasized that family planning is a fundamental right that empowers women within society and their families.
“One of the most effective ways to reduce vulnerabilities and promote more resilient societies is to empower women and guarantee them access to reproductive health services, education, and information,” she said.
