Africa-Press – Angola. The third conference of the cycle, on the occasion of the centenary of Agostinho Neto, was held Thursday, via Zoom, as part of the series “Conversa de Academia à Thursday”, by the Angolan Academy of Letters, with Paulo de Carvalho as the speaker.

When lecturing on the “Liberating speech in the poetry of Agostinho Neto”, for academics from Angola, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Italy and Portugal, under the moderation of Mário César Lugarinho, from the University of São Paulo, the speaker highlighted the dimension of the President, António Agostinho Neto, taking into account the context and the time, which allowed him to acquire an awareness of struggle, since adolescence.

The lecturer recalled colonial repression, portrayed in several of Neto’s poems “Colonization radically repressed the populations, forcing them to simulate the colonizer’s cults, which caused a feeling of revolt among the colonized. It was during this period that Neto wrote a period marked by the feeling of angolanity and the desire to wake up to a tomorrow that was intended to be freedom and harmony among men”, highlighted Paulo de Carvalho.

During the lecture, the president of the Angolan Academy of Letters said that colonization led to the looting of the continent, whose people could not decide on their own destiny, hence Neto denounced, in his poetry, the segregation of Africans in their own land.

For this reason, the poet demanded “the liberation of the suffering people of Angola, the same people where he would seek the strength and courage to fight. There are, for example, poems in which Neto makes it clear that the liberation struggle needed a helmsman, having himself later chosen to lead the struggle, culminating in the proclamation of independence”.

According to the lecturer, the founding father of the Angolan homeland has stressed the desire for freedom in his poetry and in it is also present the philosophical question that accounts for the correctness of the principles of the liberating deed”. However, “not only about the struggle the poet sang; he also sang about love”, he recalled.

In the next “Conversa da Academia à Thursday”, scheduled for the 22nd of this month, starting at 7:30 pm, under the moderation of literary critic Mário César Lugarinho, the speaker will be the writer Inocêncio Mata, who will speak about “Fições da Memória na poetry of Agostinho Neto”. As usual, participation via Zoom will be free.
