In an electrifying game, the senior men’s team of Petro de Luanda revalidated, this Saturday, the title of the 29th edition of the Wlademiro Romero Supercup, by beating arch-rivals 1o de Agosto by 99-92, in a game played at the Multiuso pavilion of Nossa Senhora do Monte, in the city of Lubango, province of Huíla.

With the victory, the men of Brazilian José Neto, who are starting the basketball season in the best way, add the 9th title of the competition, which honors the former Angolan coach, for the contribution he made to Angola’s dominance in the basket of the African continent. .

1o de Agosto entered the game better and was the first to score. At 4 minutes he had the score in his favor (5-1). It was just the beginning. From then on, with José Neto’s men failing to finish, the team under Lazere Adingono showed willingness to win the trophy.

With the changes made, Petro de Luanda balanced the match and at the end of the sixth minute a triple from the winger Carlos Morais cheered up the team, who had a well-groomed set on the other side. At the end of the first quarter, the two teams were tied (27-27).

The second period was marked by the debuts of the Ivorian Mbuloukou Diabate and the American Hameed Ali, one for Petro de Luanda and the other for 1o de Agosto, respectively, in the new football season 2022/23.

Despite being the first official game, the two athletes gave new dynamics to the game and showed quality. If on the side of 1o de Agosto, Tárcio Domingos was the most dissatisfied athlete, for the “tricolors” it was Gerson Gonçalves “Lukeny”.

With the pavilion completely full, in the resumption of the second quarter, the two best basketball teams on the African continent entered more determined. Despite the balance, the difference resided in the completion of the triple shots.

With the 1o de Agosto team ahead of the scorer, the two trebles converted by Carlos Morais in the last minutes allowed Petro de Luanda to go into the break with the result in their favor (56-50).

In the third quarter, 1o de Agosto reacted and took over the lead in the match and ended up winning by 72-67.

In the fourth and final period, when everything seemed to be lost for Petro de Luanda, the three points converted by Gelson Gonçalves, which increased to the point difference (84-81), with 5 minutes left of the game, were decisive for the victory.

With four minutes remaining, the score was 92-84 for Petro. Carlos Morais’ fine aim in long-distance shots, in tight moments, was worth the tricolor, and thus managed to manage the advantage in the marker and take the water to the mill of his team.

It is the second time that the city of Lubango is the stage for a Wlademiro Romero Super Cup match, after having already been in 2009, with Petro de Luanda’s 108-102 victory over the eternal rival.
