PGR concludes initiation of proceedings against Isabel dos Santos

Africa-Press – Angola. The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) announced, this Thursday, in Luanda, the completion of the initiation of three cases against Angolan businesswoman Isabel dos Santos, awaiting the response to the letter rogatory sent to Dubai.

One of the cases is related to the management of Isabel dos Santos, as president of the Board of Directors of the Angolan oil company Sonangol, according to the Attorney General of the Republic, Hélder Pitta Gróz.

According to the judge, who was speaking to the press on the sidelines of a plenary session of the Superior Council of the Judiciary of the Public Prosecutor’s Office (CSMMP), the initiation of the case against Isabel dos Santos has been completed and the indictment has already been drawn up.

Before going to court, he explained, the PGR notified the accused, sending a letter rogatory to the United Arab Emirates authorities, whose response, positive or negative, they should receive at any time.

“We are managing to respond well to the processes we had in hand, but criminal inspection is not always easy, especially when it depends on third parties”, he highlighted.

The first of the three proceedings initiated by the PGR against Isabel dos Santos is a precautionary measure of arrest, decreed on December 23, 2019, by the Provincial Court of Luanda.

The second is related to the management of Sonangol, while the third has to do with a civil precautionary measure.

Regarding the case against the former Vice-President of the Republic, Manuel Vicente, he stated that the PGR is working on the certificates for its establishment, highlighting that the immunities have already been lifted, as the period granted by law has expired.

“So now we are working on them and we will see how long we can complete it,” he emphasized.

On the occasion, Hélder Pitta Grós also clarified the progress of the process involving General Manuel Viera Dias “Kopelipa”, noting that the adversarial phase has already been completed and is only awaiting judgment.

Regarding the case of Portuguese-Angolan businessman São Vicente, he said that the PGR is concerned with the execution of the sentence, against which no appeal was filed, so that the Angolan State can recover the amounts deposited outside the country, in the order of two thousand million dollars.

In relation to the plenary meeting of the Superior Council of the Judiciary, he informed that there are 770 auditor magistrates waiting to be sworn in, to cover the insufficiency and respond to the need that has arisen in the sector.

From this perspective, Hélder Pitta Gróz defended the reinforcement of inspection services, in order to make them stronger and with trained professionals.

He also spoke of the need to create working conditions for human resources in the places where they will be placed.
