PGR in the Eastern Judicial Region bets on overcoming magistrates

Africa-Press – Angola. The coordinator of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) of the Eastern Judicial Region defended, in Saurimo, the appreciation and continuous improvement of the institution’s staff, through regular training of magistrates, Justice technicians and administrative employees.

According to Astrigildo João Pedro Culolo, who was speaking during the third annual meeting to assess the activities carried out last year in the provinces of Moxico, Lunda-Norte and Lunda-Sul, the need to improve internal organization to meet the challenges that arise today on a day-to-day basis and in the socio-economic dynamics of the region, are part of the sector’s priorities.

The magistrate assured that during 2022, the performance of the PGR’s activity in the Eastern Region saw an important boost, with the reinforcement of 30 Justice technicians, through the last public tender held, which made it possible to fill the deficit of human resources.

Astrigildo João Pedro Culolo considered, Thursday, that the reduced number of magistrates makes it difficult for the smooth running of activities carried out by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

He said that despite having two magistrates at the level of the region, there is a need to increase by at least 20 in each province, out of the more than 30 existing, to guarantee coverage.

Recognizing the socio-economic difficulties that the East Region faces, he praised the existing partnership with the Government of Lunda-Sul, through the support provided that contributes to the resolution of various problems of the body and to improving the lives of citizens.

It noted with concern the substantial increase in cases of evasion of paternity, and guaranteed continuous actions for the defense of minors, workers, incapable and absentees with regard to the inviolability of their rights, in case of any threat. “It is also urgent to pay special attention to issues related to immigration, illegal exploitation and trafficking of strategic minerals, registered at the level of the Eastern Region”, he said.

Regarding the fight against corruption and impunity that the country has wagered on since 2017, he assured that the PGR is committed to this fight. He also added that “it is necessary to improve the working conditions of all technical actors in the judicial sector, providing institutions with adequate facilities and equipment compatible with the functions to be performed, taking into account the era of information and communication technologies”.

Astrigildo Culolo took good note of the projects in the portfolio, aimed at building provincial headquarters of the PGR, with guarantees of implementation in Lunda-Norte, waiting for Moxico and Lunda-Sul to also be contemplated, in order to change the situation in the sector .

The coordinator of the PGR for the East Region envisaged closer cooperation with other local institutions in the judiciary sector, criminal investigation bodies and courts, for the resolution of problems related to matters of procedural evidence.

The bet, he added, is also on the dissemination of laws to raise society’s legal awareness, so that citizens can act accordingly and provide solutions to their problems in accordance with the law.

The magistrate asked the Government to continue to support the courts, in the defense of the treasury, in the event of non-compliance with contracts and other acts harmful to the common good, in addition to improvements in internal organization so that it is up to the task of meeting the challenges that arise on the day day-to-day activities and in the socio-economic dynamics of the region.

By presenting some solutions to dignify the body, the governor of Lunda-Sul Daniel Neto, announced, for the coming years, the construction of the comarca court in the municipality of Muconda, the multipurpose building of the Military Court, the provincial and municipal delegations of the PGR and residences in all municipalities to accommodate magistrates serving in those localities.

He acknowledged that despite the challenges faced by the sector on a day-to-day basis, the progressive improvement in performance in action is remarkable, which, he considered, is recognized by society.
