Police create 44 Community Security Councils in Lubango

Africa-Press – Angola. At least 44 Community Public Security Councils, one of the elements foreseen in the “Neighborhood Police” program, were created from July 2022 to the present date, by the National Police in Huíla, a strategy being implemented in the municipality of Lubango, with the purpose of combating crime.

Neighborhood Police is a philosophy of community outreach policing, implemented by the Provincial Command of the National Police (PN) of Huíla, in July 2022, which in the first phase covers Lubango. For each neighborhood there is a sector head, with a team of four to five agents.

Each council is made up of, in addition to members of the “Neighborhood Police” initiative, neighborhood administrators and coordinators, religious and traditional entities, school directors and other members of civil society.

The information was provided Monday, in this city by the PN spokesperson in Huíla, inspector Benedito Walter, referring to it being an open council in which anyone can take part to report on the public security situation of the your area, sector or neighborhood.

In each neighborhood of the municipality of Lubango, according to the official, a council was created that works in a collegial manner and meets periodically, where each person gives their opinion on public safety and deliberately creates strategies for next steps.

Since the creation of the council, he highlighted that they have observed a greater rapprochement between citizens and police officers, citizens’ openness to fighting crime with more reports, a reduction in crimes in the municipality and the resolution of other security problems.

He added that from January to November this year alone, as a result of the implementation of the “Neighborhood Police”, there were 1,243 complaints that resulted in 935 arrests, hence the plan to extend the initiative to the municipalities of Humpata and Chibia.

The councils constitute permanent cooperation mechanisms between the PN, citizens and municipal administrations, to discuss local problems and find solutions, combining knowledge, experience and responsibilities to together contribute to everyone’s safety.
