Portugal provides 34 million euros to Angola

Africa-Press – Angola. The Portuguese Government will make available, by the end of this year, an extraordinary budget of 34 million euros, for the rehabilitation of the São Francisco de Penedo Fort.

Located in the Angolan capital and classified, in 1992, as national historical-cultural heritage, the

Penedo Fortress was built in the colonial period to monitor the sea and protect the Port of Luanda.

Currently under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture, the Penedo Fort was also used as a warehouse for slaves in colonial times, by the Portuguese authorities.

The extraordinary amount of 34 million euros results from a Memorandum of Understanding for Direct Support to the General Budget of Angola, initialed this Sunday (10), in Luanda.

The signatories of the financing agreement were the ministers of Foreign Affairs of Angola, Téte António, and of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, João Gomes Cravinho.

The signing took place on the sidelines of the 6th Ministerial Meeting of the Joint Path, Angola-European Union (EU).

According to the Portuguese official, the support is a celebration of what is a joint heritage, adding that it has a special meaning, because it takes place close to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April in his country, and a year before the 50th anniversary of independence of Angola.

The agreement takes into account the priorities defined in the Long-Term Strategy – Angola 2050, as well as the relevant sectoral strategic programs.

Angola and Portugal established diplomatic relations on March 9, 1976, and have strong cultural and historical ties.
