Africa-Press – Angola. More than 196 million euros will be made available by the Executive for the construction of the 220 kV electricity transmission line Gove-Chipindo-Cuvango, whose expenditure was authorized, by order, by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço.

The information, published in Diário da República, adds that the aforementioned electricity transmission line will have a length of 175 kilometres, including the respective substations, and refers to the Cassinga mining project.

The expenditure authorization is contained in Dispatch number 99/23 of 9 May, which guides the opening of the Simplified Contracting Procedure for the implementation of the project, estimated at 196 million 789 thousand euros.

According to the document, the project is part of the efforts of the Angolan government to reduce poverty by increasing and improving basic services, including access to electricity.

The contract will be in charge of the Turkish company Pak Yatirim Insaat Sanayi Ve Tcaret AS, LCC, internationally accredited and recognized in the execution of projects for the construction of energy transmission lines, photovoltaic plants and wind energy.

The Turkish company, approved by Presidential Order number 198/21, of 22 November, was responsible for the project’s feasibility studies.

The Presidential Order authorizes the Minister of Energy and Water, with the power to sub-delegate, to carry out decision-making acts and supervisory approval, including the preparation of procedural documents, the adjudication, celebration and signature of the contract with the Turkish company.

The first and large Turkish investment in Angola comprises the management of the Cassinga ironworks, in the municipality of Jamba, 315 kilometers east of the city of Lubango, province of Huíla, managed by the Turkish company Tosyali Holding. The aim is to make it a powerhouse in terms of steel exports.

The Cassinga steel mining project, whose iron ore exploration activities were suspended in the 1970s, resumed in 2019, after the signing of the investment contract, in which electricity was a determining factor.

The initiative needs a lot of electricity on site for its effective start-up, which is why it also counts on the reinforcement of the arrival of energy via the Gove-Matala connection, a project under implementation, which will interconnect the north and south systems, through from the provinces of Huíla and Huambo, to then reach Namibe, Cuando Cubango, Namibe and Cunene.

It is estimated that the municipality of Jamba has a reserve of 4.3 million tons of iron and more than seven million tons of gold.
