Africa-Press – Angola. The participation of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, in the US-Africa Business Summit, marked by interventions in two high-level dialogues and meetings with African counterparts and businessmen, marked the news for the week ending this Saturday.

The Angolan Head of State was one of the highlighted entities on the first day of work at the summit, which took place in Dallas, state of Texas, where he intervened in three different moments, to talk about the African reality and about the pillars of the strategic partnership that intends with the USA, in different areas.

Opening the event, as the first Vice-President of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, João Lourenço said that the USA and Africa are essential partners to face, together, the challenges of food security, energy, defense , the environment, international trade and the global economy.

According to the statesman, private investment is important for the economies of African countries, which need to increase and diversify the production of consumer goods and services, transform raw materials and diversify export products.

João Lourenço said that Africa expects a lot from the new partnership with the USA to finance and build the infrastructure necessary for its development.

The Angolan Head of State participated in two High-Level Dialogues, and in the first, related to the panel “Infrastructure Investment Strategy in Africa”, he highlighted the way in which the United States of America is helping Angola in the construction and financing crucial infrastructure for its development.

In the second panel, on the theme “Navigating the future of energy in Africa”, the Angolan President said that “the countries’ economies will still continue to be very dependent on the combination of energy obtained from fossil resources with environmentally friendly sources”.

He referred to the investments made in Angola to improve the energy production and consumption process, having stated that the country currently has remaining capacity and is already considering the possibility of exporting, after meeting internal demand.

Before ending the day, President João Lourenço held, on the sidelines of the summit, a meeting with his Liberian counterpart, Joseph Nyuma Boukai, with whom he discussed bilateral relations.

In the same sense, he received the president of the North American Business Council for Africa, Florizelle Liser, and the special presidential coordinator for American infrastructure, Amos Hochstein, with whom he discussed issues of bilateral interest.

In Dallas, the President of the Republic received nine executives from different multinationals and representatives of the North American Government, with whom he spoke about the possibilities of increasing the strategic partnership and investments in Angola.

During the event, the Angolan Government secured 1.3 billion dollars for investments in different infrastructures, within the framework of agreements initialed with North American financial institutions.

Another topic of note has to do with the audience that the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, granted to the global director of Sustainable Finance, Land Protection, Freshwaters and Oceans at The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Melissa Garvey.

On the occasion, the Minister of the Environment, Ana Paula de Carvalho, said that the Angolan Executive is working on reviewing the National Biodiversity Strategy 2019/2025, to extend its duration, until 2050.

He stated that the aim of this review is to ensure the continuity of the projects included in this strategy, which has already been implemented for five years.

During the week, deputies to the National Assembly (AN) reached consensus on the maximum sentence of eight in prison for crimes of prostitution against a minor, informed the president of the first Commission, António Paulo.

The information was provided during the joint meeting, in particular, to discuss the revision of the Penal Code, whose proposal will bring Angola into alignment with current international standards.

Conversely, António Paulo said that a minimum sentence of three years in prison was established so that rapists cannot request the payment of bail and be released on provisional release.

The commander of the Angolan Navy (MGA), Valentim António, defended the need for greater proactiveness on the part of countries to counter maritime threats, in a complex and rapidly changing world.

When speaking at the opening of the Obangame Express 2024 exercise, the official said that “today no country, in isolation, is capable of responding to maritime insecurities”.

According to the commander, this cooperation must be developed both in the field of regional and global internal training, taking into account that the seas play an important role for nations.

The president of the Supreme Court, Joel Leonardo, drew attention to the importance of the role of judicial inspectors for the good performance of the sector.

On a political-partisan level, the visit that the vice-president of the MPLA, Luísa Damião, made to Namibia, at the invitation of SWAPO, as part of cooperation between political groups, stands out in Luanda.

In Windhoek, the politician held meetings with the President of the Republic, Nangolo Mbumba, and with the vice-president of SWAPO and the Republic of Namibia, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.

On the occasion, Luísa Damião congratulated the vice-president of SWAPO for her nomination as a candidate for President, in the elections next November, and for being a woman who inspires others across the continent.

Luisa Damião highlighted the fact that the MPLA and SWAPO share unbreakable bonds of friendship and cooperation, also highlighting the leadership of President Nangolo Mbumba and Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah in the SWAPO party.

The vice-president of the party in power in Angola made it known, during the meeting, that the MPLA remains committed to Peace and National Reconciliation, as well as the consolidation of the democratic state and the rule of law.
