Africa-Press – Angola. In all, 15 pregnant women from the municipality of Funda, municipality of Cacuaco, in Luanda, received, on Monday, mosquito nets, bleach, omo, soap, disposable diapers and bath tubs for babies.

The gesture of the Non-Governmental Organization Panafricare, with funding from Exxonmobil Angola, aims to reduce malaria rates.

At the delivery of the goods, the municipal supervisor of the Program to Combat Malaria, José de Andrade, recalled that the disease is transmitted by the bite of the mosquito (Anopheles), which is why he advises all pregnant women to use mosquito nets.

“Many women do not like to sleep under mosquito nets due to negligence and forget that they carry a new being in their womb, which if not well taken care of during pregnancy can be born sick”, said José de Andrade.

The supervisor also advises the general population to use mosquito nets, maintain hygiene in homes, wash food and boil water before consumption, as well as avoid the concentration of dirty water on the streets of the neighborhoods, in order to prevent diseases such as malaria, which is the leading cause of child death in communities.

The official revealed that, during the first quarter of this year, 44,286 positive cases were reported.

Malaria in the municipality of Cacuaco, which caused the death of 203 people, against 36,357 cases and 104 deaths in the same period of the previous year.

According to the supervisor, the increase in cases is due to the negligence of the population, given that there are communities in some areas that do not like to use mosquito nets and do not respect basic sanitation measures.

“We will continue to do our work with the population in order to lower the high rate of cases registered this year”, stressed José de Andrade, citing as the most endemic districts of the municipality the Mulenvos de Baixo, Kicolo, Vila sede and the commune of Sling.

The coordinator of the Panafricare project, José Paulo, said that the project at the level of the municipality of Cacuaco covers two districts, namely Sequele and Funda.

José Paulo added that, this year, the organization’s goal is to intensify information to families.
