Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, on Tuesday, in Cairo, Egypt, met with the President of the European Council, António Costa, with whom he assessed the real situation prevailing in the Gaza Strip, Palestine.
The Angolan statesman is in the Egyptian capital since Monday, to participate in the Arab League Summit, which takes place this Tuesday, in his capacity as Chairman of the African Union.
Speaking to the press, António Costa, who will also participate in the Summit, said that it was an “excellent” opportunity to see the Angolan Head of State again, to address issues of bilateral interest, with emphasis on relations between the European Union and the African Union.
He underlined that he hopes that during this year, in which Angola leads the continental organization, relations between the European Union and the African Union can be further strengthened.
Regarding the holding of the extraordinary Arab League summit that will analyze the critical situation in the Gaza Strip, António Costa considered the initiative to hold the event to be positive.
“We consider it very positive that there is this initiative for a concrete project for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and that respects the rights of the Palestinian people, to which we will be very committed because it is an essential step to ensure what is a lasting solution for peace in the region”, he expressed.
For António Costa, it is a solution that can allow the existence of two states in which Palestine and Israel can live in peace and friendship side by side.
João Lourenço participates in the extraordinary Arab League summit in Cairo, called to assess the situation in the Gaza Strip and its development in the present and immediate future.
The Arab League is chaired by Bahrain and the initiative for this meeting came from the Egyptian president, Abdul Fatah Khalil Al-Sisi, who mobilized other nations in the Arab world.
The summit will try to find a common position among the Arab States taking into account what is being envisaged in some latitudes, mainly on the Washington-Tel-Aviv axis, where solutions are being considered that could represent “the solution to the Palestinian cause”.
Although Angola is not a member of the Arab League, João Lourenço was invited to represent the African Union (AU) position and reinforce Afro-Arab cooperation, especially on critical issues that affect both Arab and African countries, such as issues of security, migration, armed conflicts, terrorism and humanitarian crises.
The Emergency Summit aims to discuss the latest developments in Gaza, focusing on plans for the safe return of Palestinian civilians to their homes, the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and its future governance, in the scope of the ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas.
