Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, arrived this Saturday in the province of Cuanza Norte, where he will find out about the evolution of the construction works of the Caculo-Cabaça Hydroelectric Facility, in an investment budgeted at USD 4.5 billion.

This is one of the construction phases of the Hydroelectric Facility and consists of diverting the river, an action that will allow the start of the construction of the “wall” of the dam and the powerhouse, where four turbines of 530 megawatts will be placed ( MW) each, for a total of 2,172 MW.

The Caculo-Cabaça Hydroelectric Facility is expected to start generating commercial energy in October 2026, a period for which the first of the four turbines at the plant are expected to start operating.

The Chinese contractor and subcontracted companies maintain the various work fronts, including the construction of the village, where dormitories, offices, cafeterias, local administration, among other services are installed.

The undertaking, with funding from China, includes civil works and a transport system associated with 1,300 kilometers of line.

The construction of the Caculo-Cabaça Hydroelectric Facility is also being financed by the German Government with an amount of around US$1.1 billion.

When launching the 2nd phase of this project, in November 2022, the president of China Gezhouba Group International Engineering, Liu Hualiang, said that the average annual production of Caculo-Cabaça will be 8,566 gigawatts of hydropower.

This is a capacity that will make it possible to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases by around 7.2 million tons per year in Angola.

This is the largest Hydroelectric Facility built by a Chinese company in Africa.

The “Three Gorges” project has companies such as Voith, the O&G consortium and other participants.

In the Middle Kwanza Corridor, the Capanda, Laúca and Cambambe hydroelectric plants are in operation.

Angola is part of Package 2

The current energy matrix, including hydro, thermal and hybrid power plants, has led Angola to be part of Package 2 of the countries with the highest installed electricity capacity in Africa.

The African Energy Atlas 2020-2021 brings a list led by Egypt, followed by South Africa, Algeria, Nigeria, Morocco and Angola, which come in Package 2.
