Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan President João Lourenço on Monday expressed deep consternation at the human losses and material damage caused by the intense rains that have hit several regions of the country in recent days.
In a message addressed to the nation, João Lourenço says that the climate phenomenon has caused tragic consequences, with fatalities and missing citizens recorded, a situation that mobilizes urgent efforts by the authorities for location, rescue and medical assistance operations.
In his message, the Angolan statesman highlights that the rains also caused flooding and collapse of homes, road closures and significant damage to social infrastructure, particularly water supply systems, compromising the normal functioning of cities, towns and other locations.
Given the seriousness of the situation, the President of the Republic presents, on behalf of the Executive and in a personal capacity, condolences to the bereaved families and expresses solidarity with all those affected.
The President of the Republic assures that assistance to the victims is a priority for the Executive, which, through the competent bodies, will continue to act promptly and diligently in supporting the affected populations, as well as in restoring normal conditions in the affected areas.
The number of fatalities from the rains, recorded on Saturday in the provinces of Luanda and Benguela, rose to 29, according to the report of the Civil Protection and Fire Services (SPCB).
The SPCB says that Benguela also recorded the collapse of 114 houses, the damage to 19 others and the damage to 12 vessels of which nine were rescued and three removed, as well as the dragging of four vehicles by the waters.
In the country’s capital, in Luanda, the bulletin records six deaths, one missing, 33 thousand 785 people affected, comprising six thousand 757 families.
In terms of infrastructure and material damage, six thousand 752 houses flooded, four were damaged and one was destroyed, in Luanda.
