Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan President João Lourenço highlighted on Saturday in Luanda the historical importance of the dialogue between the Angolan state and the Vatican, essential for the definition of social policies.

Speaking at the meeting between Pope Leo XIV and members of the government, civil society and the diplomatic corps, as part of his four-day visit to Angola, the Head of State said that even during difficult periods in the country’s history, the relationship between Angolan authorities and the Catholic Church has remained oriented towards building understanding.

According to the Angolan statesman, this dialogue has resulted in exchanges at the highest level, including visits by Angolan Presidents to the Vatican, and has contributed to the formulation of public policies in the sectors of health, education, water supply, energy, housing, job creation and the fight against poverty.

He acknowledged, however, that social challenges remain complex, requiring time and resources, and advocated for greater involvement of the Catholic Church as a social partner of the State in promoting economic and social development.

João Lourenço emphasized that combating inequality, social exclusion, and indifference is a priority for government action, expressing openness to more in-depth joint work with the Church in this area.

Religious Freedom and Peaceful Coexistence

In this regard, the President reaffirmed that Angola is a secular state where all citizens can freely practice their faith without restrictions.

He highlighted the strong presence of Catholicism in the country, alongside a diversity of religious denominations that coexist peacefully, an example of tolerance in Angolan society.

He also referred to the regular holding of ecumenical services on historical dates, led on a rotating basis by representatives of different religions.

Improvement of Places of Worship

During his speech, João Lourenço noted the State’s investments in improving religious infrastructure, particularly the Muxima Sanctuary, designed to provide better conditions for worshippers.
