Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan President João Lourenço on Thursday awarded medals to the signatories of the Alvor Agreement, recognizing the decisive role they played in achieving national independence and consolidating the Angolan State.

At the ceremony, held in Luanda as part of the commemorations of the 50th anniversary of National Independence, the Head of State awarded the Independence Class medal to the historical leaders of the three liberation movements, António Agostinho Neto (MPLA), Álvaro Holden Roberto (FNLA) and Jonas Malheiro Savimbi (UNITA), whose contributions were decisive in achieving national sovereignty.

The Alvor Agreement, signed on January 15, 1975, constituted the legal framework for Angola’s transition from a Portuguese colony to an independent nation, providing for the creation of a transitional government composed of the three movements, the cessation of hostilities, and preparation for the first general elections.

The signing of the accords represented a historic step in national unity, although it did not prevent the emergence of subsequent conflicts, and they are remembered for their symbolic and decisive role in consolidating Angolan sovereignty.
