Africa-Press – Angola. The President of Angola and Chairperson of the African Union, João Lourenço, said on Tuesday in New York that the country has sought a honest and genuine contribution to the solution of the conflict in the Sahel region, Sudan and East of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In intervening at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, under the theme “Best together: 80 years and more, for peace, development and human rights”, João Lourenço said Angola, for his own national reconciliation experience, knows that lasting peace is only achieved with dialogue and commitment.
He said that in relation to the DRC, Angola’s steps created a negotiating frame with peace solutions that, unfortunately, did not materialize in December 2024, as was expected, but remain as a platform valid for other efforts that have been pics for the purpose of setting a definitive end to this conflict.
Angolan’s head of state said that Angola’s contribution is part of a broader effort of the African Union and the international community to stabilize regions that continue to face serious security challenges, political instability and humanitarian crises.
He also stressed that the mechanisms created in the context of conflict mediation in eastern RDC, although they have not achieved the expected results on the expected date, remain a valid and useful instrument for new negotiation processes, constituting an important political capital for all regional and international peaceful actors.
The President also highlighted the situation in Sahel and Sudan, regions that, according to João Lourenço, require a firm and coordinated response, in the face of increased terrorism, armed violence and humanitarian disasters.
