Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, won the 6th edition of the “José Aparecido de Oliveira Award”, promoted by the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).
The information is contained in a note released this Thursday (18th) by the “cplp.org” portal, adding that the distinction was decided by acclamation, by the Jury, made up of permanent representatives of the Member States with the CPLP, meeting in the May 15th of the current year.
The jury recognized the “unique contribution” to the international projection of the CPLP, especially for the implementation of the Agreement on Mobility between the Member States of the Community.
The work carried out by the Angolan statesman, in favor of integrating the principles of representativeness and gender equality in the organization’s statutes, also contributed to this recognition.
The aforementioned jury praised the professional career of President João Lourenço, in the defense of public causes and the leadership of regional processes on the African continent.
The prize will be handed over to the President in a public and solemn ceremony, taking place on the sidelines of the XIV Conference of Heads of State and Government of the CPLP, scheduled for 27 August this year, in São Tomé and Príncipe.
Established in 2011 and held every two years, the “José Aparecido de Oliveira Award” consists of the attribution of a diploma of merit and a cash payment.
Its purpose is to recognize and honor personalities and institutions that stand out in defending, valuing and promoting the principles, values and objectives of the CPLP, as well as carrying out studies and research work that fall within this scope.
The candidates for the “José Aparecido de Oliveira Award” are proposed by the Member States, by the Associated Observers and Consultative Observers of the CPLP.

2021 – Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of the Portuguese Republic.
2018 – António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN).
2016 – Jorge Sampaio, former President of the Portuguese Republic, Carlos Lopes, former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and Lauro Moreira, career diplomat from Brazil and first Permanent Representative to the CPLP (ex-aequo).
2014 – Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, former President of Timor-Timor-Leste, and the Timorese Catholic Church – Episcopal Center of Timor-Leste (ex-aequo).
2012 – Lula da Silva, former President of Brazil.
