The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, expressed, this Sunday (17), solidarity and regret for the high loss of life, in a message addressed to his South African counterpart, Ciryl Ramaphosa, resulting from the dramatic situation that befell the province of Kwazulu. -Christmas, caused by the intense rains and consequent floods, which also caused the destruction of public and private goods.
In the message, the President of the Republic “expresses the solidarity of the people and the Angolan Government, for the difficult time they are going through, and conveys the deepest condolences to all the bereaved families”. It also states, with great emotion, that the high loss of human life, with its inherent suffering, and the scale of the destruction of public and private goods, constitutes a painful loss for the entire South African people and for the country authorities.
The South African east coast, affected since last Wednesday by heavy rains, is “caught up” by the effects of global warming, with a projection of 2ºC, likely to cause an increase in the frequency and intensity of heavy rains and floods.
The scientific community says that rainfall in Kwazulu-Natal province has reached levels not seen in the last 60 years.
