Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, received, yesterday morning, in Cidade Alta, the Angolan African champions in the modalities of Jiu-Jitsu, Judo and Wrestling, in recognition of the commitment shown in the competitions in which they were engaged.
The three modalities, which qualified for the World Cup, won, in general, a total of 67 medals, being 29 gold, 22 silver and the remaining bronze in the competitions in which they participated.
In recognition of the support received from the State for a more dignified participation in competitions, the athletes handed over two medals and a cup to the President of the Republic.
Taking the floor, the Head of State said that it was a great honor for him and for the Angolan people to receive the medals from the athletes’ hands, in symbolic representation of all other achievements.
“This is a source of pride for Angola and a demonstration that our young people are on the right path”, he said.
The President of the Republic underlined that the achievement of the athletes represents the positive side of Angolan youth who embrace noble causes, highlighting, among which, the practice of sport.
“Thank you very much for providing our country with the joy of having won in international continental championships”, concluded President João Lourenço, recalling that Angolan youth must be guided by the motto:”Drugs, no! Alcohol, no! But sports and I do study!”
The two medals given to the President of the Republic are silver and refer to the title of African vice-champion, in the cadet level, and of African vice-champion, in the junior category, both in Judo.
The president of the Angolan Judo Federation, Hermenegildo dos Santos, who spoke on behalf of the group, praised the gesture of the Head of State and said that it will further increase the athletes’ self-esteem.
The national judo team, in cadets, is scheduled to participate in the World Cup at the end of this month, in Bosnia.
