Africa-Press – Angola. This Sunday, the President of the Republic expressed satisfaction with the degree of functioning of the Hospital Complex for Cardio-Pulmonary Diseases “Cardeal Dom Alexandre do Nascimento”, former Luanda Sanatorium, which has already successfully last year, more than 100 heart surgeries.

João Lourenço went, late yesterday afternoon, to the hospital unit, to find out about the operation and assess the degree of patient satisfaction. Received at the door with welcome songs sung by staff, the President of the Republic made a long visit to the three main areas of the hospital, namely cardiology, pulmonology and neurosurgery, having interacted with patients.

Speaking to the press, President João Lourenço said that the investment made in the infrastructure, as well as in the professionals who take care of patients, was worth it. “We are satisfied with what we have just seen. It was just worth the investment made”, he underlined. He highlighted the fact that the Cardeal Dom Alexandre do Nascimento Cardio-Pulmonary Disease Hospital is performing highly complex cardiac and neuro surgeries, previously only possible abroad.

“After eight months, the hospital is responding not only to patients in the city of Luanda, but, in general, in the country. It has received patients from practically all provinces”, he said. During the visit, João Lourenço, who was accompanied by several members of the outgoing Executive, also interacted with professionals from the areas visited, including doctors, nurses and technicians, who demonstrated their commitment to the work they carry out in the hospital unit.

“They have already passed 100 heart surgeries, and they are willing to continue working for the health of Angolans. This is very gratifying”, underlined the President of the Republic.

Patients Thank You For Visiting

Josefina Caveia, 38 years old, hospitalized in the neurosurgery ward, was pleased with the visit of the President of the Republic, having thanked the gesture. “It was a very pleasant surprise. He tried to find out about my state of health, and if I’m satisfied with the care they give me at the hospital,” she said. Transferred from Huambo province, this patient said that she is being treated with great care, and that the conditions found in the hospital are up to par. Helena Tchikola, another hospitalized patient, praised the President of the Republic’s gesture, stressing that she will not easily forget. “I felt very good with the visit of the President of the Republic. After all, we have the father who accompanies us”, she stressed.

The hospital’s director, Carlos Alberto Masseca, said that the visit of President João Lourenço to the hospital unit represents a reason for satisfaction and pride for the collective of workers, being a stimulus for the work carried out.

The former Luanda Sanatorium Hospital, considered “death row” for many years, given the precarious conditions it had at the time, now enjoys better conditions to provide more humane care to cardiopulmonary patients, as a result of the works of rehabilitation and expansion that it has benefited from.

The hospital’s recovery process began in March 2018, after the visit to the unit, on December 15, 2017, by the President of the Republic, shortly after taking office. Not having liked what he saw, the Head of State directed the immediate rehabilitation, expansion and equipping of the health unit, in order to give greater dignity to patients and employees.

The hospital unit has not benefited from rehabilitation works since 1972, when it was inaugurated. The Cardio-Pulmonary Diseases Hospital Complex “Cardeal Dom Alexandre do Nascimento”, which saw an increase in the number of beds from 250 to 500, is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and technologies to provide highly complex services in the specialties of cardiac, vascular and thoracic, intensive care, neurosurgery, cardiology, pulmonology, general and thoracic surgery.

It is also available for services in angiology, obstetrics with maternal or fetal heart disease, pediatrics, internal medicine, endocrinology, neurology, nephrology, gastroenterology, allergology, rheumatology, infectious diseases, ophthalmology, otolaryngology and urology.

The hospital completely “broke” with the sad image it carried from the past, transforming itself, today, into one of the best health units in the country. It now has five towers with four floors, one of which is for training, with a medical simulation laboratory, a technician and an annex pavilion. The colonial building was completely rehabilitated and modernized, with external arrangements, access roads and a parking lot. for 450 vehicles.
