Public Works Minister Announces Rehab of 200 Km of Roads

Africa-Press – Angola. The minister of Public Works, Urban Planning, and Housing, Carlos Alberto dos Santos, announced on Tuesday (09) the start of the rehabilitation of 200 kilometers of roads in the province of Huambo, happening anytime during the current year.

These are the Huambo-Calima, Calima-Gandavila, Huambo-Aterro Sanitário, Aterro Sanitário-Caála, and Caála-Cuima sections, to be completed over a period of 12 to 18 months.

These roads connect communities with the highest traffic and agricultural production in this region of the Central Plateau.

The official stated that the 200-kilometer project also includes the rehabilitation of national highways 358 and 120 along the Gove-Chipindo, Huambo-Chipipa, Chipapa-Chitatamela, and Chitatamela-Alto-Hama bypasses, to improve the free movement of people and goods and boost trade in the region.

The official noted that the assignment of various projects in that province, including demolition, construction of 200 housing units, and road renovation or construction, has already provided 1,500 temporary jobs, a figure that could increase to 2,000 with these projects.

“Roads are built to promote development, focusing on agricultural production, minerals, and some areas with important projects such as drinking water distribution and electrification,” he emphasized.

In turn, the governor of the province of Huambo, Pereira Alfredo, said that there is abundant fertile land in this region, and therefore the construction or redevelopment of national roads will enable sustainable development, mainly in the agricultural sector of this region, which has acceptable potential.

He added that after the completion of this infrastructure, it will be possible to attract agricultural investors to the Calima and Gandavila areas, which have very arable land, for the implementation of economic diversification.

These works were commissioned on Tuesday (09) on these road sections in the province of Huambo. One is valued at Akz 9.5 billion while the other is valued at Akz 66.5 billion.
