Africa-Press – Angola. The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, said that the European Union should look at Africa as a relationship “between equals”, “not paternalistic” and without forgetting the impact of the “colonial system” on African economies.
“Europe should relate to African countries on an equal basis and it should never be a paternalistic relationship, it should be a relationship of equals, but also a relationship based on our historical understanding of what happened in the past”, he underlined, during the meeting with the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, quoted by EFE.
Cyril Ramaphosa added that African countries are now at a stage where they are trying to develop their economies but are conditioned “by restrictions, by rules that do not really have a robust scientific basis”, as is the case with obstacles to the export of African products to EU markets. “These are restrictions that limit trade, but more than that, they have a devastating effect on the opportunities and living conditions that could have millions of people on the African continent,” said the South African President, who was speaking in Pretoria, at a conference with the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez.
The South African President stressed that he defends that European restrictions on products from Africa must be addressed, on a basis of friendship and good understanding, as they are very serious”, considering that Europe must support African States, in a joint work, to answer the questions of poverty, unemployment or social inequality.
Ramaphosa addressed this issue because of citrus production, in which Spain is the world leader, followed by South Africa, which faces, however, restrictions on exports to the EU.
For his part, Pedro Sánchez assured that Spain and South Africa will “work together, also in Brussels, to find solutions to this situation”.
