Ravine Progression Threatens Cambulo Power Plant Construction

Africa-Press – Angola. Construction of the photovoltaic power plant in the municipality of Cambulo, Lunda-Norte province, may be suspended in the coming days due to the progression of a ravine.

On Tuesday, the vice-governor of technical services and infrastructure, Faustino Alteres Malenga, went to the site to assess the level of progression of the ravine and find solutions to contain it.

The ravine, which is a few meters from the fence of the site where the power plant is being built, also threatens to cut off traffic on National Road 180-A, on the Dundo/Nzangi section.

The vice-governor assured that the local government will work with the Ministry of Public Works to find urgent solutions to contain the ravine and safeguard social the infrastructure and ensure the safety of users of National Road 180-A.

The Cambulo photovoltaic park, with a physical completion rate above 70 percent, will produce 38.6 megawatts of electricity.

In addition to Cambulo, two more photovoltaic plants are underway in the municipalities of Cafunfo (41 megawatts) and Cuango (26 MW), projects included in the rural electrification program, which foresees a total of 15 solar power plants in an equal number of locations in Lunda-Norte.

With the completion of these projects, Lunda-Norte will produce 146.79 megawatts of energy from clean sources, increasing the population’s access to the product at affordable prices.

In 2026, the Angolan government plans to begin the project to interconnect the electrical system of the eastern region, which includes the provinces of Lunda-Norte, Lunda-Sul, Moxico, and Moxico Leste, in an investment estimated at over 800 million euros.

A line of more than 500 kilometers will be built, which will be supported by four electrical substations in the municipalities of Dundo (Lunda-Norte), Saurimo (Lunda-Sul), Kamanongue (Moxico), Luau, and Cazombo (Moxico Leste), with voltage levels of 400/220/60/110 kilovolts, respectively.

The interconnection of the Northern and Eastern systems is also planned to enter into operation in 2026. It will have a voltage level of 400 kilovolts and will pass through the province of Malanje, Xá-Muteba, and Saurimo.

The implementation of both projects will last three years (2026-2029).
