Africa-Press – Angola. One thousand families affected by the floods in the provinces of Luanda, Bié and Malanje, were supported by the Angolan Red Cross (CVA), in partnership with the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) and the Red Crescent (CV).
The information was provided by the president of the CVA, Delfina Cumandala, on the occasion of World Red Cross Day, marked May 8, having mentioned that assistance, this year, covered a total of 6,500 people.
According to the person responsible, the assistance included cash support for people who lost their homes and livelihoods due to the rains, without however detailing the amounts for each family.
He said that the Red Cross team has been working closely with Civil Protection and the Fire Department to identify the locations most affected by the floods.
The president informed that the support program was expanded to three months, with the aim of serving 3,200 families in these three provinces.
He explained that in addition to monetary assistance and the distribution of tablets for water treatment, the project includes carrying out community awareness actions on issues of health, hygiene, safety, shelter, protection, gender and inclusion, as well as the active engagement of communities.
“We are committed to not only providing immediate help, but also empowering and strengthening communities to deal with future adversities more effectively,” he clarified.
On the other hand, Delfina Cumandala revealed that her institution provided essential assistance to communities affected by the drought in southern Angola, ensuring continued support for vulnerable families.
“Until December 2023, with the support of the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) and the Red Crescent (CV), the Angolan Red Cross provided assistance to 1,600 families, totaling 10,400 people in the provinces of Cunene, Huíla and Namibe”, clarified.
This assistance provides immediate support, through monetary and food assistance, in addition to medium and long-term resilience actions.
He highlighted that another two hundred families received support to strengthen their resilience, through the provision of small animals, seeds and agricultural inputs.
The president said that four community kitchens were reactivated in two municipalities in the province of Namibe, resulting in the direct benefit of two thousand children.
The Red Cross originated from the initiative of Jean Henry Dunant, who was born on May 8, 1828, in the city of Geneva, Switzerland.
During the battle of Solferino (Italy), which took place on June 24, 1859, Henry Dunant helped injured soldiers and then lobbied political leaders to adopt more measures to protect the victims of the war.
Currently, the Red Cross and Red Crescent constitute an international humanitarian movement, neutral and impartial, not linked to any State, with approximately 97 million volunteers internationally. Its foundation dates back to 1863, in the city of Geneva.
