Africa-Press – Angola. The requalification of some roads in the urban area of the city of Ondjiva, capital of the province of Cunene, will consume more than 240 million kwanzas, amounts from public funds, assured, this Monday, the provincial governor, Gerdina Didalelwa.

Speaking to the press, at the end of an observation visit to the works on the respective roads, the government official said that the rehabilitation of the sections, which has been underway since last February, consists of placing concrete in specific points that are closed.

Part of this undertaking is Avenida 11 de Novembro, close to the Cuanhama District Court, the road that connects the 4 signs to the PGR facilities, the BPC roundabout and the space in front of the Media Library.

After the completion of these roads, the governor said that the work will be redirected to Rua Rei Mandume, the IGAE road, which is completely damaged, in order to improve urban mobility.

On the occasion, Gerdina Didalelwa said that due to the rains that fell between December 2023 and January this year, as well as the lack of a water drainage system, the subsoil is saturated, which is damaging a large part of the asphalt carpet..

He explained that the problem of soil saturation also made the primary work of filling holes and laying asphalt unfeasible, otherwise it would degrade in a short space of time, and was therefore prevented by laying concrete.

With the use of concrete, it was considered to be consistent and lasting works, despite not covering all streets, due to financial difficulties.

“If we had sufficient budget availability, the work would be extensive, but unfortunately we are focusing on specific points, until the approval of the aforementioned plan, which, if implemented, will solve this water problem that is destroying the city”, he stated.

According to Gerdina Didalelwa, solving the road problem necessarily involves more consistent actions, with the implementation of the integrated infrastructure plan and the macro-drainage system in the city of Ondjiva, which since its foundation has never benefited from requalification.

In turn, the director of the Infrastructure and Technical Services office, Édio José, said that the requalification work also includes sealing the water table, through a concrete floor structure, reinforced with a mesh base with durability of not less than 20 years.

He said that Ondjiva has 22 kilometers of roads, most of which are damaged, but due to financial constraints, only two kilometers of three points will be repaired in two weeks.

He reinforced the need to approve the integrated infrastructure project, because the city of Ondjiva is located within the Cuvelai river basin, which requires in-depth macro drainage work to allow the water to be drained.

The city of Ondjiva has a population of 113,280 inhabitants, living in 26 neighborhoods.
